And the winner is.....................
(Posted August 14, 2008 by Yvette)
It was quite an evening in the BHEC Rec Hall. On one side Blue Elementary had tranformed the hall into all of your childhood memories complete with a playground, yellow school bus, Mrs. Kapp's classroom, School House Rock, Good Night Moon, hopscotch, a time-out area, a lunch lady and additional elementary school delights. On the other side of the rec hall White University there was a full size dorm room, a Bronx House fraternity house, all of your favorite college themed movies, college jerseys, A & W root beer fountain, pizza boxes and an oversized mortar board.
The two teams entered the rec hall and had to compete in various presentations. Each team had to sing three songs....a cheer song, a fight song and an alma mater. They also had to perform two skits. A new category was initiated this year called the "tear jerker" in which each team presents a camper from each unit to read a story about why they love BHEC and what keeps them coming back each year. It was a very emotional event.
In the end, BLUE ELEMENTARY took Color War 2008!!! Camp is now united and we have a fun filled few days left at camp.
Tonight each unit has a Social. Friday night is our last Oneg and Saturday in the much anticipated Folk Festival.
Check back for new photos!!

Whats happening in Junior Unit?
(Posted July 31, 2008 by Olivia )
It was very nice to meet all the families on visiting day! After all the parents left the campers all participated in BHEC's annual counselor hunt. During the counselor hunt, the counselors hid throughout camp then the campers got points for each counselor that they found. Monday morning we welcomed the new campers as they arrived for our second session. All of the new campers have adjusted well and the shacks have all welcomed the new kids!
The last few days the campers have been enjoying the beautiful weather and the great activities like, boating, tennis, basketball, baseball, arts and crafts, swimming and much more. The campers have also been learning a lot during our instructional swim periods, their skills have been improving every day. Today, Shack 5 spent the morning on a hike to town! While the rest of the unit got the chance to do Israeli dancing with our visiting Israeli dance specialist.
The Unit has also been preparing for our Junior Unit Oneg, tomorrow night. We have written a skit and a song, in addition the campers have learned a dance to perform for the camp tomorrow night after Shabbat. Junior Unit has a lot of upcoming events to look foward to like Six Flags and Color War! Check back for more updates!

LITs Working Hard
(Posted July 23, 2008 by Dave Jacobs)
The LITs have been busy all week. We started last week with a visit to Camp Hill Village, which is a community for people with special needs. We went on a tour at first of the village, which encompasses 600 acres. We then had a picnic in the park by the lake. We ended the day hard at work, the LITs were divided into three groups to help out the different gardens. One LIT said, "It was a hard working experience in which I learned a lot about life, and how hard it can be and how lucky we are." It was a rewarding day for all of us.
Later that week a campwide battle came to BH-EC. Yes, it was Battle of the Sexes, a one day event of games, competition and fun for the entire camp. The girls and boys fought hard from early in the morning till late in the evening, but in the end there had to be a winner. By the end of the night the boys were victorious. A good time was had by all, and don't worry girls you'll beat them next year.
BH-EC and the Hudson Even Start Literacy Program are now in their third year of a reciprocal advantageous relationship. Today we visited the Literacy Program and shared our knowledge of different states. We look forward to the visit from the students where they will get to experience a day in camp. Another reminder about book donations on Visiting Day for the Literacy Program, all books are welcome. We look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday.

A message from the Unit Heads
(Posted July 23, 2008 by jenn olivia janna )
Last week all the units attended Zoom Flume Water Park. It was a beautiful day for fun in the sun and water slides. As you can tell from the pictures, all campers had a fantastic time! On friday night the entire camp was entertained by the Hill Oneg, which was based on the Lion King. The hill campers all worked together with their counselors to perform a dance, song and skit. The following morning the Hill and Junior Unit saw a special juggling performance; he involved many campers in his act. The kids learned to juggle and do other magic tricks. Meanwhile Senior Unit was energetic while watching two of the Senior Unit hockey teams battle it out for a spot in the playoffs.
This past Monday, Battle of the Sexes broke out during breakfast. The day was themed around the cirucs and kept the kids actively involved all day long. They participated in events like teamwork relays, water relays, a scavenger hunt, skits and dances. All day the boys and girls were neck and neck, but in the end the boys were victorious! The boys won a lazy morning.
Today is our second annual July Madness event, which will once again be filled with exciting activities, including frisbee toss, an eating contest and a scavenger hunt. Campers are paired up from all different units, which will result in one pair winning it all in the final round! Following July Madness, each unit will hold their own Closing Activities for first session, which include socials, campfires and bunk activities. The Senior Unit social is "the Senior Prom" and the Junior Unit social is "the Time Warp". The Junior Unit will dress up from a decade of their choice. The units will enjoy snacks, music, games and dancing.
The week ends with banquet, talent show and the drama hobby play. We tearfully say goodbye to the first sessions campers and hope to see them again next summer. For those coming for parents visiting day, we look foward to meeting you.

Yom Israel a BIG hit at BHEC Yesterday
(Posted July 19, 2008 by Anat)
Yesterday was Israeli Day at BHEC we started the day with Boot Camp for Senior Unit which was an obstacle course to mimick some of our Army training. Every unit participated in this awesome activity. Junior Unit made Kibbutznik Characters in A & C with Marielle and Senior Unit made a mural of Jerusalem with Jake. The Hill went on a N&P tour of Israel with Seth and Anat where they visited areas like the dead sea, Hermon Mountains, Eilat and the Kinneret. On each stop they learned interesting and fun facts about each of these sights. To cool our campers down on the hot hot day we fashioned a wet and wild slip and slide through our giant map of Israel.
As the day continued our Dead Sea Spa opened at the lake where every camper took a dip. What would Israeli Day be without music and dancing, between our resident Music Guru Sam Gold and this weekends artist in residence Etan Ofrane and Jill the dance lady we rocked to Israeli beats and learned some Israeli Dances.
To make it even better I along with my fellow Shlichim served and authentic Israeli lunch to the campers. We had falafel, pita, fried eggplant, babganoush, of course hummus and for dessert Israel's birthday cake to celebrate its 60th birthday.
Yesterday ended with a beautiful Kabbalat Shabbat. We observed a moment of silence for the fallen soldiers whose bodies were given back to their families. We honor these heroes and pray for their families.
Last nights Oneg was performed by The Hill and was their version of The Lion King, named the ZION KING. I think all of us in camp can say we have some true talent in our littlest campers.
The six of us are having a great summer please look out for the Shlichims message to come as we report back on all the Tastes of Israel we feed the campers.
Shabbat Shalom
Instructional Swim Makes a Big Splash
(Posted July 17, 2008 by Jordan)
Hello Parents,
We are happy to share more great news about our ongoing Instructional Swim periods. Here are some highlights:
The Hill is continuing to learn basic swim skills and water safety. There are even two swim groups who are learning skills for advanced strokes, such as the butterfly stroke. Many of our youngest campers are feeling more comfortable swimming on their backs. Also, we are pleased to see many Hill campers placing their faces in the water without hesitation. They are making amazing progress!
A total of 16 Junior Unit campers learned to dive in the lake last week...dont forget to ask your child if they previously did not know how to dive!
This week in Junior Unit, we are focusing on lifeguarding techniques. We have already taught our campers how to rescue a distressed swimmer with the use of a rescue tube. We are now moving on to more advanced topics, such as caring for a swimmer with a possible neck/back injury. The campers seem very enthusiastic about learning, hopefully we will inspire some to one day become lifeguards here at BHEC.
General Swim is always a hit....many campers are catching fish and using our new kayaks. Of course, The Rave Trampoline always has someone bouncing off of it.
We hope you will come swim with us at the pool during Visiting Day, or take a boat out on our lake.
Have a great weekend!

What has Junior Unit been up to?
(Posted July 11, 2008 by Olivia )
Junior Unit has been up to a lot since the start of camp. All of the campers have been put into a hobby of their choice, the hobbies are done everyday and include, waterfront, arts and crafts, sports, the ropes course, tennis, nature and pioneering and drama. The drama hobby has been working hard on putting together "Alice in Wonderland" for the entire camp to see at the end of the first trip. The campers have also been involved in some other fun programming, such as, Candy Sushi Making, zipline, cookie baking and jewlery making! The campers have also been learning a lot of new skills during instructional swim.
Fourth of July was a great time for everyone, we started off the day singing patriotic songs followed by a scavenger hunt and relay events. Then the unit went to join the entire camp for a barbque lunch by the lake. Following the delicious barbque, junior unit had lots of time to try out all of the inflatables, including an obstacle course, human foozeball, inflatable twister and dunking their counselors in the dunk tank. The unit then went up to the carnival where they played lots of games and won tons of prizes. The campers loved the days events!
On Wendsday we had our first trip day, the unit went together to the movies. The campers got a chance to pick from Hancock, Get Smart, Kit Kitridge the American Girl and Wall-E. The kids enjoyed a chance to travel out of camp for the day and see a movie with their friends. There are a lot of fun activities that Junior Unit is looking foward to, like, spending next wednesday at the water park, our Junior Unit Social, battle of the sexes, basketball tournament vs other camps and our Junior Unit oneg! As you can see Junior Unit has been having a lot of fun and enjoy all the pictures.
LIT's News
(Posted July 11, 2008 by Dave Jacobs)
The first couple of weeks for the LIT's have been FUN and exciting. On July 4th we helped to run two booths for the kids including name that tune and soak the counselor. That same weekend the LIT's planned and organized a Hill camper party, that included music, games and of course food. They had a great time dancing and playing the night away with the Hill campers.
Throughout the past week, we have also been putting on educational workshops involving the camps variety of alumni and staff. These workshops have included peer interaction/self-esteem, teamwork, and bullying. It was both an educational and fun experience for everyone that was involved.
This week we are planning our Oneg for Friday night. We have been working hard all week on a song, dance and ofcourse a play. We will be performing it tonight in front of the entire camp and then tomorrow night for the Senior side. The kids are very excited and can't wait to show camp what they can do...Wish them luck!!!!
Everyone is really enjoying themselves this summer. There is much more to come and ofcourse we will keep you all up to date with everything we do. Have a great summer!!!!

Seeking donations to help beautify BHEC grounds
(Posted April 27, 2008)
We're looking for donations to purchase picnic tables to place around camp for this coming season. Areas include around the lake, in the units, at the pool and near the rope course. Tables are $225, but we will take donations of any amount. Please contact the office for more information.
We did it! $600,000 raised for the Meet-Your-Match Capital Campaign. Thanks to all who donated!
(Posted March 26, 2008)
Meet Your Match II is a 1:3 capital matching grant program from Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF). Every $3 raised by the camp from donors' gifts of $10,000 and more in support of capital improvements between September and December 31, 2007 will be matched by $1 from HGF. Or, Alumni could contribute to the Alumni Association's Capital Fund, which made its own donation for matching.
Our goal was to raise $600,000 - which will bring us to $800,000 after the HGF match!
But there's still more money to be raised, so don't stop now!
We're looking for 5 PC's running Windows XP to add to our camp computer area this summer... if you have a computer to donate to camp, please contact Seth or Elaine. Thank you!
