From Linda to BHEC Campers
(Posted August 21, 2010 by Linda)

Do you miss camp? I do too.

But I am still here. I'm working at the older adult side this week. Friday night was Shabbat dinner here. But YOU were missing. Some of the older people had been here earlier in the summer. They asked about you. Each of you who had dinner with the older adults, made it so special for them. If you helped with the singing and dancing, is was extra special. So now, even as I enjoy the beauty of BHEC and our older guests, I miss all of you.

This my first summer, was one I will always remember. And like I told you all at Folkfest, it is memories that will make summer 2010 stay with you. It is dreams (and day dreams) that will keep us all connected throughout the year. And of course, a reunion is just around the corner!!!!

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Linda

Color War Update
(Posted August 10, 2010 by Ashley, Aviva, Jenn)

Color War broke out Saturday night after dinner at the waterfront. Staff dressed up as characters from the Wizard of Oz, Annie and the Phantom of the Opera, battling over which was better-a play or films and introduced Color War 2010 as Blue Broadway vs White Hollywood! Day 1 consisted of a competitive, but amazing game of tug-o-war in which the white team came out on top putting them in the lead for the day. Everyone participated in activities like tennis baseball, BBK, water relays and an exciting counselor hunt. At the end of day 1 the white team was in the lead. Starting the morning of day 2 the war was tied! The teams were psyched to get their day started! We started off the morning with Bar Mitzvah games on the hill, volleyball and basketball in Jr unit, Tennis baseball in senior unit and the LITS played an exciting game of hockey. The afternoon consisted of track and field events for the hill and jr unit, a sing down in sr unit and a tasty cake baking contests for the LITS. All lunch and dinner cheers and skits have been amazing and going into our evening activity, Hall of Fame, the blue team is in the lead by only a few small points. Hope your on the edge of your seats to find out who wins tonight! We can't wait for Sing!

COLOR WAR IS HERE!!!

Bonus / Gratuity Information
(Posted August 6, 2010 by Linda)

Dear Parents,

It's hard to believe that there are only nine days left to camp. It's been a great session so far. I'm writing just to remind you about a change in the tipping policy. This year your tuition had a separate line called "Bonuses". We will not be sending out a tipping sheet as the amount that you already paid will be used to provide bonuses to Counselors and Program Staff. No one above the level of Counselor will be included in the bonus pool. Counselors are being evaluated by there Supervisors and Division Heads. While every Counselor who completed the summer will receive a bonus, there will be a slightly higher amount given to those whose evaluation is outstanding.

Some of you have asked if you should still give Counselors tips. You may, if you wish, thank a Counselor privately with a gift or small tip. However, the amount we have collected will ensure that every Counselor receive an amount that is similar to what they got last summer when tips were pooled. Of course, if a Counselor went the extra "mile" for your child, an extra thank-you will mean a lot.

Feel free to contact with with any questions.

Best Wishes ,

Linda

LIT's Volunteer Program
(Posted July 29, 2010 by Jodi R.)

LIT's 2010

Monday, July 26, 2010

After an early breakfast this morning, the LIT’s traveled to Hudson to volunteer at the Hudson Literacy Program, a summer camp for underprivileged children who have not had many experiences outside of the city of Hudson. LIT’s were paired with a camper and did activities with them. Activities ranged from board games to arts and crafts to kickball in the gym. Then we all gathered in the lunchroom to make sculptures out of sliced fruit and vegetables. Afterwards we had a discussion about the similarities and differences between our camps and about the importance of giving back to the community. Next week the campers in the program will come visit BHEC for a fun-filled day on our campus. The LIT’s are excited to see the campers again.

As the summer is winding down, we would like to advise parents that if they feel it is appropriate they can send some money for our trip to the John Mayer concert on August 4. The LIT’s may want to buy food or souvenirs at the show but it is up to your discretion.

Again, the children are doing a fantastic job in their program areas as well as working with the younger campers. We have seen them rise to the challenge of being a counselor and all have grown before our eyes.

Our next phone call day is Sunday, August 1st beginning at 7:30.

Thank you,

Jodi, Jeremy, Raquel, Beth, Steven

First Session Ends with a Celebration and Talent
(Posted July 25, 2010 by Linda)

Last night, Dancers, Singers, and Budding Actors, brought Session One to a close. Earlier, a formal banquet was served to children by staff, including yours truly. I have never enjoyed wearing an apron and carrying platters of turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes etc. more than to all of those kids, formally dressed and all to the various calling out to the staff to serve them.  It has been a month of long days, activity into the night, many new friendships made and many new experiences had. Two hundred and sixty campers, a record number, learned to live together, to enjoy old friends while making new ones and to respect each other. Sport leagues and Intercamp Games, music and dance, arts and crafts, swimming and boating, campsites and zip line, trips and mass activities and a great visiting day---all and more have made Session One memorable enough that in addition to the 50 new campers coming, almost 20 Session One campers have extended as we slide into Session Two / Summer 2010.

Best wishes,

Linda

Junior Unit Rules!!!
(Posted July 14, 2010 by Larisa)

It's hard to believe second week of camp is over. We had a very busy schedule this week.  July 1st, 8th grade boys and girls went to Camp Kindering to play intercamp games.  Boys played basketball while girls played soccer.  The game were competitive, but at the same time a lot of fun.  Girls were very excited to win a trophy for 3rd place.  On July 4th the kids had a parade and walked from the camp site to the Adult Vacation Center (AVC) side. There they had a delicious BBQ with all of the campers, staff and the seniors.  After the BBQ the kids had a carnival at Alumni Hall with many fun booths like black jack, extinguish the flame, cover the balloon with shaving cream and many many more.   On July 5th, we were off to Camp Kindering again for intercamp games with the 6th grade boys and girls. Boys played basketball well under the hot sun and came in very close to winning 2 games short of 2 points of which one of the games went into overtime. Girls played soccer well and came in 3rd place again.

Please visit again soon for another update.

Larisa

The Hill Update!!!
(Posted July 14, 2010 by Jody Kramer)

What a great first two weeks the Hill campers have had.  Once we got past the wave of homesickness we were on a roll.

Zoom Flume was a great relief on one of the hottest summer days.  The Gong Show had everyone rolling on the floor.  The other night the Hill boys had such a fabulous overnight under the stars.  They sang around a campfire, made smores and grilled potatoes.  Girls are scheduled for an overnight tonight.  They are soooo excited!!!

Stay tuned for more updates.

Gift of Life Bone Marrow Donor Program
(Posted July 11, 2010 by Linda)

Dear Parents

I wanted to let you know that today we had a program at camp featuring Jewish Heroes. We always talk about famous Jewish characters in history and what they have done for Jews throughout history. At Channukah time we have the Macabees and Purim time we speak about Queen Esther and Mordechai.  Today your child had the opportunity to meet a Jewish hero of modern time. Each year there are people who save the life of a perfect stranger through the donation of either their stem cells or bone marrow. Without this “gift” the recipients of the transplant would not survive. Finding a match is genetically linked.  For Ashkenazi Jews the devastating effects of the Holocaust are still felt today because millions of potential bloodlines have been severed. Even the Sephardic population has trouble finding a match as this population is underrepresented in the bone marrow registry today.

Today Yoheved came and talked to the campers. She originally joined the Gift of Life bone Marrow Registry as a potential donor and later became an actual donor. Today she continues volunteering her time by working bone marrow drives with her entire family.   Your children asked many questions and were very inspired by the mitzvah of our Jewish Hero. We ask that you speak to your child about our Jewish Hero day and hope that the mitzvah that they witnessed today will inspire them to think about Tikkun Olam throughout their life.

Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation was started in 1991 when Jay Feinberg was diagnosed with AML soon after graduating college. No one in Jay’s family matched and the family was forced to start a foundation to search for a match. Five years later the last person at a drive in Chicago became Jay’s perfect match. Jay continued the mission of Gift of Life and serves today as its Executive Director today.  Gift of Life isa leader in the world of donor registries. It was the first to utilize bloodless (buccal swab) testing, launch an online donor registration system, and establish an umbilical cord blood bank. To date there are over 168,000 in the registry and Gift of Life has facilitated over 2100 transplants. Gift of Life has been publicly recognized for its achievements.  Most notably, Jay was the inaugural recipient of the Charles Bronfman Prize, the National Marrow Donor Program's Allison Atlas Award and the recipient of the Hadassah International World Citizenship Award.

Because most patients do not have the luxury of time to wait to search and find a suitable match, it is Gift of Life's mission to increase its registry. Because Tikkun Olam is very important to NJY camps we are hosting a bone marrow drive at camp on visiting day for staff and families. To be tested potential donors must be between the ages of 18 – 60, live in the United States or Canada and be in relatively good health. Testing is done through a simple cheek swab and takes less than 10 minutes. More information about Gift of Life can be found on their website at www.giftoflife.org. We hope that if a match is found from our drive that we as a camp can celebrate saving a life together.

Looking forward to visiting day.

Camp Update
(Posted May 6, 2010 by Jordan)

Dear Campers, Parents & Staff,

We are within two months till the start of camp!  The home stretch is in sight.

We would like to give you some updates as we approach the start of the summer:

  •  The five- day trip to Cape Cod and Boston is shaping up to be an amazing time.  With so many activities to do in the area, we are having a tough time choosing.  Whale watching should be an incredible sight. For beachgoers, relaxing on the beach is sure to be a hit.  Senior Unit will also visit Provincetown and additional locations for some sightseeing.
  • Our LIT meeting at Linda's house was a total success.  We were able to brainstorm some great news ideas for the new LIT Program.  Overnight trips, the new Trailblazing program which will create trails and camping sites all over the undiscovered acres of camp, plans to volunteer time during their morning work period, and many other aspects of their upcoming summer.  There was a great turnout. Thank you LIT's and parents for your involvement.
  • Karen Gibofsky, a BHEC Board Member, raved about the turnout for our May 2nd Camp Tour Day.  With so many new families and prospective campers visiting for the first time, we were really excited to see such enthusiasm.  Camp looked great.  All visitors got a taste of summer due to the 85 degree weather.  A special thank you to the Sulema Family for creating such a welcoming atmosphere at the entrance of camp.
  • We have a talented fitness supervisor Amir who is creating a weight training and toning program for campers and staff.
  • Enrollment has increased dramatically over last year.   We have 25 new campers on the Hill and still counting.  We are very excited that so many new children will be able to make friends for life this summer.
  • With the addition of Steven Weiner as our supervisor for outdoor activities, we are confident that our outdoor program will be amazing.  We have many new staff members to run Trailblazing and Ropes, Jeremy Monte will be running Expericamp, Rocketry and assisting on hikes.  Daniel Kaminsky will be spearheading Biking for all of camp, and of course Archery is on the schedule with our new instructor Michael.  The outdoors team has been carefully selected to create a solid group of staff members.
  • Randi, our Program Director, will be introducing a new way of scheduling.  Campers will be able to choose some of their weekly schedule through a fun and interactive auction.
  • We have hired a Drama Instructor, Inbal, from Israel to share some new games as well as perform plays on Shabbat.  Campers performing in our Drama Production should be as excited as the past summers.

Please stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to June 28.

 See you in Copake!

Summer 2010 Update!!!
(Posted March 12, 2010 by Jordan Kapp)

Hello Campers, Parents and Staff:

As expected, we are all getting excited for the 2010 camp season. Linda recently visited camp and said that all snow has melted, which means that summer is approaching quickly .

  •  We would like to ask all families to please reach out to neighborhood family and friends to help recruit new campers.  We are quickly filling beds, but the more campers, the merrier.

  • Spots are going quickly, so if you have not signed up your child yet, please visit the "Registration" page on the website. Applications and Scholarship forms are available there.

  • Supervisory roles are being solidified this week, and we are aiming to have contracts for all staff members mailed by next week.

  •  Jon Geller, our Waterfront Director, is doubling our Waterfront staff to support the demand for Instructional Swim.  He is also having two lifeguards return as Canoeing Instructors certified through the American Red Cross.

  • Our Shlichim for this summer are a strong team. We have hired two new Nature & Pioneering specialists who are trained for outdoor activities.  We also have well qualified Arts and Crafts, lifeguards, and counselors joining our staff this summer. They are all excited to plan and run our annual Israeli Day in July.

  •  With help from our new Adult Vacation Center Administration, we are planning on having more activities integrating our senior citizens and campers. This will bring together the BHEC family full circle.

  • With the addition of a new music instructor, there will be a BHEC chorus created.  If you want to be the next American Idol, BHEC is the place to start!

  • Udi, our Food Service Director, is cooking up some new recipes for our kids’ kitchen. He is excited to share his new take on international Shabbat dinners. In addition, he is updating our already yummy salad bar and nutritious kosher meals.

See you in Copake!

SNOWMAN MELTS!!!!!
(Posted February 10, 2010 by Randi)

A group of BHEC campers decided to meet up and build a snowman this morning. Within a half hour it had melted. One very smart camper figured out the answer to the riddle. The group's warmth carried over from the summer was too much for the snowman to endure.

So everyone, while you enjoy this snow day, just remember-BHEC SUMMER 2010 is heating up. Tell your friends that spaces are filling fast!

Jordans Back!!
(Posted February 2, 2010 by Jordan)

What an honor! After 20+ years of spending my summers in BHECamps, I have reached a really amazing point in my camping life. I am excited to take on role as Head Counselor for this upcoming summer. So far, the amount of support and congrats from campers, staff and parents has been overwhelming. I thank each and every one of you!
Lastly Linda, I appreciate you giving me this incredible opportunity.

There was a great turnout at the BHEC Reunion on Jan 31st. The kids were all playing games and having  fun on the rides. In addition, Linda and I were able to introduce ourselves and take questions from parents in the Skybox. Thank you to Jon Geller, our Waterfront Director, for emphasizing his focus on creating a brand new Instructional Swim Program.
Our 2nd meeting was just as successful. We had the chance to meet the LIT 1's as well as their parents. The questions and comments will guide us as we continue to develop an amazing new LIT Program.

For those of you who do not know me, I started camp in 1988 as a 7 year old Bunk 1 camper. From age 7-14 I was proud make my way from The Hill, through Junior Unit, and onto Senior Unit...the best times of my life. I went on to become a CIT 95 which trained me to become a counselor in Junior Unit for 3 more years. From there I took to the lake, where I guarded for 6 years...I emphasize that there was no pool yet! For the following summers, I was LIT Head for 2 summers followed by 2 summers as Waterfront Director. Becoming Head Counselor is the cherry on top.

Along with Hellen and Norah, my wonderful wife and cuter than life baby, we are all looking forward to creating and sharing more true BHEC experiences.

See you in Copake!

January News from BHEC
(Posted January 5, 2010 by Randi)

Happy New Year to our Families Alumni and Staff

There are 173 days left until camp. Sign Up Now as beds are filling. Registration can be done online by clicking the "REGISTER NOW" link on our website www.bhecamps.com or by requesting an application from Randi at randi@bhecamps.com.

REUNION REMINDER- January 31st New Roc City in New Rochelle, NY. 10am - 12 pm. If you haven’t already done so please RSVP to Randi at randi@bhecamps.com.

Your help is needed!! There's something you can do that would help camp and cost you nothing.  Please think of anyone you know who has camp aged Jewish children and tell them about the Campership program.  This is an incentive program funded by an anonymous donor that pays $1000 of the fee for first time campers at Berkshire Hills Emanuel Camps.  Please tell anyone you can think of who has camp aged children (relative, friend, neighbor, fellow temple or synagogue member, business contact) about this opportunity.  While there are some eligibility requirements (cannot be in a Jewish day school, cannot have attended a Jewish camp for three weeks or more) most children are eligible. The incentive is not need based.  I am guessing that collectively we know hundreds of people whose children could benefit from this.  If everyone out there actively spreads the word, it would make a BIG difference for BHEC.  Please take a minute to make a list of people you can tell and then please get the word out.  Thanks for your love of camp, and for your continuing support.  Our Families and Alumni are camp's greatest resources, and I am consistently amazed by how powerful they can be when galvanized.
